HAPI and UNU Collaborate on Researching Metro Manila’s Bodies of Water Valuation and Initiative Project.
Submitted to and Edited by Christopher Michael Barredo

Last June 17 – 19, almost
coinciding with the International Day of Water, Uzbek-Russian Dr.
Shokhrukh Jalilov, Postdoc fellow d.Sc. (Tech), whose research interests cover water economics and policy, water, food and energy tradeoff and security issues, consulted HAPI Executive Director Jennifer C. Gutierrez, Environmental Science and Ecosystems Management consultant, for a research collaboration with the United Nations University (UNU) entitled the ‘URBAN WATER INITIATIVE
PROJECT’ which will tackle the state of our
inland bodies of water in Metro Manila, such as the rivers and lakes, as well as the value the local populace place on these resources.

HAPI ED with Dr. Shok Jalilov from UNU together
with Pasig River Rehab Commission Executive Director Mr. Ramil Tan (second from
Left)  and EMB Manila Bay Office Head Mr.
Nick Mendoza (far right)
Together, they visited the Dept. of Environment and Natural
Resources, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, Manila Bay Office, Dept. of
Health and the Biodiversity Management Bureau to get as much information on the state of the
current water bodies of the metropolis. HAPI, on the other hand, provided help with the ‘Focus Group Discussion with Willingness To Pay’ survey.

UNU had sponsored
the meal for the Focus Group Discussion and seminar held last March 20 at Vibers
Resto and Art Gallery, Leveriza st., Pasay City.  It was attended by the target number of 25 HAPI
members with good representation from all levels. Attendees were educated on the current
state of the Metro Manila rivers and lakes, as well as on their perception of pollution
and how to manage it.  Their responses were gathered for the study by Dr. Jalilov for the creation of a better
survey form questionnaire that will be used for the actual research.

This Focus Group Discussion
had increased awareness for each one about inland bodies of water and pollution levels. As the second leg of the research approaches, Dr. Jalilov, together with HAPI volunteers, will be conducting the formal electronic survey from 200 people around the area of Manila’s bodies of water on June 13-17, 2016
in preparation for the ground based survey on the third leg.

This UNU study is expected to greatly
help in the future improvement of the situation in Metro Manila and its citizens.  Possible future grants for funding and projects can be granted by the UN to our government
in order to rehabilitate and prevent further pollutionof said water bodies. HAPI is
very much honored to be of service and be a part of this.

As we push for the conservation
of our environment, we welcome you to volunteer to HAPI’s environment related activities. Together with our tree plantings,
clean-up drives and our environmental lectures series on climate
change, pollution and water, be an environmental
humanist! Act and Volunteer!
