Environmental protection refers to the preservation, conservation, and management of natural resources and ecosystems to ensure their long-term sustainability. It involves various practices, policies, and actions aimed at reducing pollution, protecting biodiversity, and mitigating the impacts of human activities on the environment. Environmental protection is crucial for several reasons. First, it safeguards the health and well-being of both present and future generations by ensuring access to clean air, water, and food. Second, it maintains the balance of ecosystems, which support diverse plant and animal life, ecological processes, and climate regulation. Lastly, it promotes sustainable development and harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
In appreciation of these, HAPI-Sorsogon kicked off a two-day event that aimed to promote World Environment Day. The latter is an event celebrated annually on the 5th of June to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), it is supported by many non-governmental organisations, businesses, and government entities.
“The aims and objectives of this event are to spread awareness about [critical] environmental issues,” a representative from HAPI-Sorsogon said. “As youth, we should be involved in taking the initiative of protecting our environment. This is relevant [as] we face environmental problems at this time.”
Some of the topics that were discussed in the seminar are the number of animals around the world that are dying because of trash, especially plastics that are being thrown into both land and sea. The guest speaker also tackled the topic of how we can collectively combat major environmental issues through methods like recycling, which contributes to minimizing the amount of trash in the world.
According to the rep, the seminar imparted key knowledge to the community about ways in which they can contribute to preserving the environment. They also promised that HAPI-Sorsogon will have more environmental-based activities in the future.
In essence, environmental protection plays a vital role in safeguarding the health and well-being of both present and future generations. The recent two-day event organized by HAPI-Sorsogon to promote World Environment Day served as an important platform to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage community involvement. The event shed light on the detrimental effects of pollution and waste, particularly plastics, on ecosystems and animal life. The discussion also emphasised the significance of recycling as a solution to reduce trash and preserve the environment.
By providing knowledge and actionable steps, the seminar empowered attendees to take responsibility for environmental protection. The positive impact of such events extends beyond the immediate community, inspiring individuals to become advocates for sustainable practices and ensuring a harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. HAPI-Sorsogon remains committed to organizing future environmental events, promising continued efforts to address environmental challenges and foster a more sustainable future.
