HAPI-Green Goes on a Coastal Clean Up in Batangas City

Environmental sustainability and human welfare are closely interconnected. In line with our commitment to these causes, my brother and I recently participated in a coastal cleanup initiative in the coastal areas of Ilijan, Batangas City, on October 29 and 30, 2023. This activity served as a reminder of the impact our individual actions can have. Amid preparations for the Barangay Elections, we decided to devote our time to this endeavour.

Coastal cleanup initiatives play a vital role in addressing the challenges faced by our coastal ecosystems and communities. Marine ecosystems provide habitats for various species and contribute to the overall health of our planet. Unfortunately, they are threatened by pollution and human activities.

[This was] a tangible demonstration of individuals united for a common cause.

In our coastal cleanup effort, we spent time both the night prior to and during the Barangay Elections in Ilijan, Batangas City. Armed with gloves, trash bags, and determination, we collected litter and waste in the coastal areas. Within a short time, we managed to fill bags with debris that could harm marine life. Over the years, I have participated in numerous coastal cleanup activities along the same stretch of coast. Despite ongoing efforts, I consistently encounter similar types of waste, including paint, playing cards, PVC tile parts, and food packaging. It is crucial to bring attention to these recurring issues and urge the barangay to take action in order to prevent further pollution.

On the day of the elections, amidst the busy atmosphere of civic duty, we continued the cleanup work before the voting precincts opened. We collected additional bags of waste – a tangible demonstration of individuals united for a common cause.

Our decision to combine our civic duty with environmental stewardship stemmed from recognizing the link between these two causes. Voting is essential for shaping our communities, and extending our commitment to a cleaner environment on this important day aimed to inspire others to realize the impact of their actions.
