Children’s Path to Awareness in Navigating Social Media

In an effort to encourage responsible digital citizenship, HAPI Kids in Bulacan participated in a two-day Global Social Media Literacy program last August 24-25, 2024. The event featured esteemed speakers PCPL April Elvambuena, WCPD Investigator from Malolos CPS; PCPT/Atty. Mary Grace Esguerra, a Legal Service Officer from Camp Crame; and HAPI CFO, Mary Jane Quiming. The program taught children about the benefits and drawbacks of social media, emphasizing its power and influence in the modern world. Topics included responsible usage, online dangers, and the legal responsibilities associated with digital platforms. This education is vital as children increasingly rely on technology for communication and information gathering in the 21st century.

In the Philippines, social media has both positive and negative impacts on children. On one hand, it enables them to connect with peers, develop new skills, and quickly access information, fostering creativity and social engagement. However, unsupervised or excessive use can lead to issues such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content exposure, and online predators. Some families, driven by financial need, have even participated in exploitative activities. The government has implemented measures like the Anti-Child Pornography Act and the Crime Prevention Act, but online abuse remains a persistent issue despite these efforts.

Protecting children on social media is crucial to safeguarding them from harmful content, cyberbullying, and exploitation. Without proper guidance, they may not fully grasp the risks of sharing personal information or dealing with harassment. Teaching them about privacy, critical thinking, and responsible usage helps minimize the negative effects on their well-being.

As one of the kids at the event said, “This program opened my eyes to the realities of the digital world. I now know how to be safer online and use social media responsibly.”

HAPI is committed to equipping children with the knowledge to navigate social media safely. Parents and guardians are also encouraged to stay involved in their children’s online lives to foster a safer environment. HAPI expresses its sincere thanks to Humanist Global Charity and generous sponsors Bob and Cindy for making this event possible. Their support plays a crucial role in shaping a generation of informed and responsible digital citizens.

HAPI remains dedicated to empowering its youth with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital era. Through ongoing educational initiatives, the organization is building a strong foundation for children to navigate the online world securely and packed with knowledge.
