We Condemn Gender Discrimination

The Humanist Alliance Philippines, International condemns the horrendous act of discrimination against transgender woman, Gretchen Diez, by a janitress and the other staff members of Farmers’ Plaza Mall in Cubao.

Yesterday, transgender woman Gretchen Diez was humiliated in a mall restroom. Not only that Gretchen was blocked from using the women’s restroom, she was dragged to the basement, detained for two hours, verbally abused, and went through an inquest. She experienced gender assault by just wanting to use a toilet she is comfortable with. This was outright harassment for living her truth.

We are saddened and heartbroken about this incident, mainly due to lack of education regarding gender sensitivity. People need to know the importance of understanding this social issue. It is high time for people to get over their ignorance and prejudices and start treating people the way they want to be treated.

This incident the disregards anti discrimination ordinance in Quezon City and violated the new law RA 11313 or Safe Streets or Public Spaces Act that seeks to prevent gender-based sexual harassment from occurring in streets, public places, online workplaces, and educational and training institutions.
We demand for the full implementation of such laws.
Harassment has to stop! No to violence against LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY
