HAPI Honors Top Chapters and Members
Humanist Alliance Philippines, International finally celebrated its eighth anniversary last December 26! To mark the occasion, members not only gathered at the organization’s Bulacan Headquarters to eat food and share “hapi” memories, the most dedicated chapters and members were also honored with awards!
Humanist of the Year
How do you make juggling philanthropy, hosting, motherhood, and self-care look easy? Just ask Angie Driskell, HAPI Junior Ambassador, who has the distinction of being HAPI’s 2021 Humanist of the Year.
From making childrens’ dreams come true to deconstructing religious myths, she has been a beacon of wit and compassion throughout the year.
Outstanding Chapter
HAPI-Cagayan De Oro went above and beyond the call of duty this year by providing not just aid for the disaster-stricken and pandemic-hit, but also hope for the youth of their local community. We at HAPI always strive to embody “humanism in action” and this Chapter proved that this year. Watch out – their saga is only beginning.
Outstanding Lead Convenor
HAPI is nothing without the proactivity of its leaders and members. This past year, no Lead Convenor has been as gung-ho as Johnny Denden of HAPI-Cagayan De Oro! Against all odds (including storms and political red tape), his leadership of the Chapter ensured that Northern Mindanaoans always have humanists to rely on for aid and guidance.
Excellent Newcomer Chapter(s)
One of the newest HAPI Chapters has also become one of its most active. HAPI-Zambales, led by super-duo Van Catayong and Goryo Rabang, has been feeding hungry mouths, assisting the afflicted, and saving the turtles on a regular basis. They truly embody humanism for the province of Zambales!
Likewise, HAPI-Sorsogon has been restlessly moving throughout the year, holding youth camps, empowering farmers, and providing valuable insight throughout the year.
Outstanding HAPI Scholar
The HAPI Scholars were instituted by Marissa Langseth, HAPI Founder, to create quality academic content for the organization’s online platforms. Junelie Velonta, one of the original Scholars, proved to be outstanding at this task over the past year, publishing works that exemplified the intellect of young Filipinos.
Quill Award
Glemir Sordilla, HAPI Scholar, proved her literary mettle this past year by publishing several of the HAPI website’s most striking pieces, including “Anxiety in Surviving Poverty,” “How Volunteering Fulfilled Me“, and “My Religious Family Found Out I’m an Atheist“. This young journalist and Bacolod native’s “quill” is one to watch out for.
