The HAPI Reading Room Takes Off

As the year comes to an end, the HAPI Alabang team, with the guidance of HAPI Junior, has started to conduct learning sessions at the HAPI Reading Room in Alabang. The location serves as a place for the children to learn about humanist values in a fun and safe environment. Prior to scheduling the sessions, all parents were asked to attend a meeting to better understand what humanism is so they could be aware of what their children would be learning at the HAPI Reading Room. This is an important step towards opening their eyes to humanism and secular learning.

On November 12, 2022, 25 children between the ages of three and five years old, all residents of the area, were given toys and puzzles to share. They then took part in exercises to see how well they recognized colors, shapes, and animals. Their communication skills, particularly how well they got along and socialized with the other children, were also observed. These seemingly basic skills had to be observed to help us better plan future lessons for them and group them according to their levels. The children were then sent home with their snacks and the pictures they drew of the animals.

The next session was held a week later on November 19. 28 children between the ages of six and nine years old, also residents of the area, came to play board games and read books that are part of the library. Once again, their ability to socialize and follow directions was observed. This was also a chance to see which books and stories they were most interested in. These observations will aid in planning better lessons for them and grouping them according to their levels.

The final session for the year was conducted on December 3 for 15 children between the ages of ten and 15 years old. They came to play board games, read books, and discuss what they want to learn in the Reading Room. They then drew pictures of whatever they felt best showcased their creativity. After their session, a short meeting was held for the Youth Volunteers who will assist with future lessons and sessions.

The year-end activities will take place on December 17 when all the children will play games and experience something similar to a classroom party. By January 2023, all groupings will be finalized and lesson plans will be ready for them after the holiday break. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn have become quite the inspiration to all those involved in the process of making this venture a success.
