Another success for the humanist community in the Philippines
Humanists International, in collaboration with Humanist Alliance Philippines, International conducted its 2nd instalment of Cafe Humaniste in Ormoc City, Leyte, Philippines. Cafe Humaniste aims to promote values of humanism and rational thinking by way of informal discussions – and this time, literally over coffee. Organized by the local HAPI Chapter in Ormoc, it was held at Bo’s Coffee on July 14, 2019. The main speaker, John Glenn Perez, talked about how to protect and uphold children’s rights in the Philippines and worldwide.
All inclusive discussion
Aside from the active and new members of the local HAPI Chapter, members of the local organization, LAYA (Leading Active Youth Advocates) were also invited for the discourse. Prevention of Human Trafficking and Child Labor was the focus of the discussion. It was very informative as the members of LAYA presented actual relevant data regarding human trafficking and child labor particularly in Region VIII. It was eye-opening and at the same time, saddening to know that the region is steeped in the trade. Accounts and documented cases of local victims of child labor were also highlighted. The discussion included preventative measures taken by both government and non-government organizations.
More of this, please
HAPI hopes to continue its collaboration with LAYA and other local organizations with similar aims. HAPI had prior collaborations with LAYA leaders, and a meeting with the same org last January, 2019.
This event is another milestone for HAPI. We had a mobilization effort in January 2019, with HAPI ED, AJ Ballares who helped plan this out. So HAPI Ormoc is reinvigorated, with the same leaders who made HAPI Ormoc one of the most active chapters of HAPI since 2013.
