“Ensuring a healthy future means investing in the generation who will carry that future.”

July has come around, which means it is Nutrition Month in the Philippines! This year, the theme is “Healthy Diet, Gawing Affordable for All”.
Angelica Driskell, HAPI Junior Ambassador, described the situation of the community in Bulacan where the continuous efforts of Mutya Valenzuela, HAPI CFO, and the rest of the Bulacan team have been significant in changing the lives of the kids. According to her, they are now educated on the importance of preparing and eating healthier snacks.
“The kids have enjoyed learning about these healthier food options but must stay on track to form better eating habits,” she said. “The [Bulacan] chapter also works with the local health workers to make sure all the kids receive proper vaccinations and easy access to medical programs when they are scheduled.”
The theme of this year’s Nutrition Month inspired HAPI-Bulacan in their recent activity that involved children in their community. 25 kids from the community picked up their goody bags filled with vitamins, bread, and other nutritious snacks that they could bring to class.
HAPI-Bulacan and its community are grateful for the constant support of GO Humanity. This activity will surely promote a healthy diet as the rainy season begins.
Driskell emphasised the significance of taking into account the health and physical condition of the kids to make sure they can focus on their lessons in the Bulacan Reading Room and their schools. “With the rainy season upon us, there is a greater need to strengthen their immune systems,” she noted.
The aforementioned event is not the only latest successful event that the Bulacan team organized, as they also distributed kilos of rice to the members of HAPI-Bulacan, residents of the neighbouring area, workers passing by, and even delivery riders. A total of 170 kilos of rice were given in kilo bags to the families. The residents were appreciative and thankful for not having to think about where they will get their rice for the day.
“It may not seem like a lot, but a kilo of rice can go a long way for a family,” Driskell said. “The residents also appreciated receiving a staple in their daily meal planning as this is usually the first thing they struggle to buy or find when trying to feed their families,” Driskell said when asked about how the residents feel towards the activity.
This event was made possible thanks to the generosity of GO Humanity’s Food Security Program which has helped so many HAPI communities.
Events like this will help empower a community and make the people involved choose a healthier and sustainable lifestyle that will help shape the future of their children and the next generation.
