Teaching children about humanism and kindness instills in them the values of empathy, respect, and ethical behavior, empowering them to make a positive impact on the world.
On May 10, 2024, HAPI-Bulacan organized an educational program aimed at teaching children about kindness and the principles of Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI). The event sought to introduce humanism and emphasize ethical behavior and mutual respect, moving away from reliance on superstitious beliefs.
The program began with an overview of HAPI’s mission and the dedication of its members to promoting humanism and kindness within the community. Following this, the children were divided into two age groups. Older children received an introduction to humanism, laying the foundation for the day’s activities as their cognitive abilities were more developed to grasp these concepts. A key highlight of the event was watching HAPI’s vlog entitled “World Kindness Day,” which featured interviews of individuals inside and outside the organization answering questions like “What is kindness for you?” and “Can we do good without God?” The responses highlighted themes of generosity, helpfulness, and altruism without expecting anything in return, which resonated with the children.
The vlog illustrated that compassion is a universal value beyond religious beliefs, deeply engaging the kids. “The children found a lot of meaning in the vlog,” said HAPI’s Chief Finance Officer Mutya Valenzuela. “It demonstrated that kindness manifests in many forms and that everyone has the potential to make a positive impact.” After the video, the children took part in an interactive exercise where they were asked, “What is kindness for you?” Their diverse responses encompassed respecting others, helping friends and parents, and contributing positively to their communities. This activity reinforced the idea that kindness is a practical, everyday action anyone can practice.
This engaging program not only taught the children the importance of compassion but also inspired them to embody the HAPI spirit daily. The children left the event motivated to enact positive change and show compassion in their unique ways.
