After a devastating fire hit Barangay Banuyo in Pilar, Sorsogon last March 13, the Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI) Sorsogon Chapter responded with compassion and urgency. The group quickly organized a relief effort to support the families who lost their homes and belongings. With the help of volunteers and generous donors, they gathered and distributed essential items like clothes, bedding, biscuits, and hygiene kits to help meet the immediate needs of the affected residents.

The first relief operation was made possible through the teamwork of community volunteers and grassroots mobilization last March 17. Understanding that one visit would not be enough, HAPI-Sorsogon returned to Barangay Banuyo on March 30 for a second wave of assistance. This time, thanks to the kindness of HAPI Main, Ms. Mutya Valenzuela, and Ms. Janice Buenaventura, the team brought 200 pairs of slippers and more clothing to share with the victims. Their goal was not just to provide supplies but to bring comfort and show that people care. “An mga tsinelas na ini, baga simple sana para sa iba, pero para sa samuyang nawaraan nin gabos, dakula na ini. Pahiling na dai kami nag-iisa at igwa kaming kadamay sa arug kaining masalimuot na pangyayari.” (“These slippers may seem small to others, but for us who lost everything, they mean a lot. It reminds us that we are not alone”), one of the fire victims said during the donation drive.

These relief efforts highlight HAPI’s mission to promote kindness, uphold human dignity, and take action during times of crisis. By coming together to help those in need, HAPI-Sorsogon shows the strength of unity and the power of community support. As the people of Barangay Banuyo begin to rebuild, HAPI remains a symbol of hope and compassion in action.
