Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions we make in life. Initially, I was drawn to nursing by the prospect of a promising career abroad and the financial benefits it could offer. However, as I began my journey, my perspective shifted.
As I immersed myself in my studies, I learned about human anatomy, diseases, and the art of patient care. I also discover my strengths and weaknesses. At first, everything seemed so complicated and scary, especially dealing with life, but later on, it gave me an excitement that I’d never felt before. I witnessed the struggles and triumphs of those around me, including my classmates and our patients. There are times when a patient is in denial about their situation, but there are other times when they are very determined to live. Each day brought new challenges and insights, teaching me that nursing is not just about providing care but also about understanding life in its most profound forms.
One of the most impactful aspects of being a nursing student is witnessing the full spectrum of life. In the hospital, I experience the joy of new life as babies are born, to see the pain of a mother during delivery, followed by the joy after the baby is born. I also confront the harsh reality of death. As I witness this moment, it gives me the courage to continue. I come to realize that these moments are profound and humbling, reminding me of how fragile and valuable life is.
Nursing can be exhausting, both financially, physically, and emotionally. There are days when I feel drained when my body aches, and my mind struggles to keep up. One of the challenges I face on this journey is the loss of someone who once gave me so much strength to continue. I have seen friends fall behind due to setbacks, which makes it even harder to keep going. Yet I remembered a simple yet genuine ‘thank you’ from the people I provided care to. That’s why I push through because I know that someone needs me. This role demands not only a mind eager to learn and grow but a heart willing to serve others.
As I progressed through my studies, I began to see nursing not just as a job but as a vocation that requires dedication, compassion, and empathy. It’s about being present for patients in their most trying moments, listening to their stories, and offering comfort in uncertainty. The true reward lies in knowing that I make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how small that difference may be. Reflecting on my journey, I see how my motivations have evolved. While financial stability is essential, I’ve come to understand that the true essence of nursing is serving humanity. Each day brings an opportunity to make a meaningful impact for everyone. As this journey closes, another chapter begins.
To anyone still searching for a career path: it’s okay to feel scared. Accept that fear, take a leap and trust that with each step, confidence will grow. Remember! It’s part of the journey.
