In a world where children are increasingly confronted with diverse beliefs, rapidly shifting environments, and growing social pressures, the need for critical thinking and genuine empathy has never been more urgent. Yet in many communities, the values of humanism, secularism, and rational thought remain in the background, often overshadowed, under-taught, or simply out of reach. Recognizing this gap, Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI) has ignited a powerful new initiative: “Books n’ Wheels”, a traveling reading room built to carry hope, knowledge, and humanistic values from one community to another.
“Books n’ Wheels” seeks not just to teach, but to spark curiosity.
“Books n’ Wheels” seeks not just to teach, but to spark curiosity. By transforming ordinary spaces into lively pockets of learning, the project brings children into a world of stories, guided reflections, and hands-on activities that open their minds to compassion, critical thought, and respect for differing beliefs. Its emphasis on secularism is not a challenge to faith, but a celebration of diversity, an assurance that every child deserves to learn in an environment where freedom of thought and fairness are upheld.
The first step toward this vision took place last October 26 in Pulilan, Bulacan, where the team met a vibrant group of children eager to learn. Despite the bad weather preventing the team from setting up at the back of the car as planned, the community quickly came together. A nearby household generously offered their garage, turning it into an impromptu learning space, a very testament to the community spirit that the project seeks to cultivate.

The session began with warm introductions, followed by a kid-friendly discussion on what HAPI is and what it stands for. The children shared their ideas about kindness, reflecting their own understanding of empathy and compassion. They also listened to a story about how simple acts of kindness can influence the world around them; an important humanist lesson delivered in a way young minds could easily grasp. The session was facilitated by Irine Dipano, a HAPI Scholar and an Education major student, whose background and passion for teaching made the experience even more meaningful for the children.
One of the kids even expressed how happy they were to be part of the session and how much they enjoyed learning with the group. They shared that the activities made them feel excited and included, especially the stories and games. With genuine curiosity, the child asked when HAPI would be coming back — showing how much the experience resonated with them.

The day ended on a lively note with games, laughter, and snacks — simple sources of joy that provide a sense of togetherness the project hopes to build. Seeing the children actively engaged, thinking deeply, and expressing themselves openly became a powerful reminder of why “Books n’ Wheels” matters.
This first session in Pulilan marks the beginning of a journey, a journey that hopes to inspire young minds, nurture critical thinkers, and create kinder, more informed future citizens. As “Books n’ Wheels” continues to travel to more communities, HAPI remains committed to shaping a world where curiosity is encouraged, and compassion is valued.
This initiative would not have been possible without the generous support of Humanists International through the Young Humanist Grant. Their unwavering commitment to empowering young people and strengthening humanistic education continues to inspire projects like “Books n’ Wheels.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude for being a steadfast support system for the younger generation and for helping us bring this vision to life.
