HAPI-Bacolod leads Negros Pride 2023 Activities

Bacolod City, Negros Occidental – The vibrant streets of Bacolod City were adorned with rainbow flags and lively colours on June 30, 2023, as Humanist Alliance Philippines, International (HAPI) – Bacolod Chapter and The Burning House 6100 led the much-anticipated Negros Pride March. A resounding celebration of unity, equality, and humanist values, the event saw participation from various groups, organizations, and hundreds of enthusiastic Negrosanons, particularly the youth. 

The Negros Pride March, now an annual tradition, served as a powerful platform for the diverse communities of Negros Occidental to come together, fostering a sense of solidarity and promoting awareness of LGBTQ+ rights. HAPI-Bacolod, renowned for its commitment to humanism together with The Burning House 6100 took the lead in organizing the event, ensuring its success and inclusivity.

Under the leadership of Ryan De Paula, HAPI-Bacolod Pride Coordinator, the Negros Pride March embraced a vision of love, respect, and freedom. De Paula, a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality, shared his insights on the significance of the event. When asked about the inspiration behind the march, he explained, “We wanted to create a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community, where they could be celebrated and affirmed. Our aim was to send a powerful message of love and acceptance to society while advocating for equal rights.”

The march commenced at the Bacolod City Public Plaza, where participants, adorned in vibrant attires and carrying banners with empowering messages, gathered with enthusiasm. The atmosphere was electric, as music filled the air, and influential voices from the LGBTQ+ community delivered powerful speeches, igniting a sense of unity and purpose.

The spirited procession then weaved through the heart of Bacolod City, capturing the attention and support of both locals and tourists. The display of colours and exuberance drew in onlookers, encouraging them to join the celebration of diversity and acceptance. Bacolod’s warm and welcoming community embraced the march wholeheartedly, showcasing their unwavering support for equality and inclusivity. 

The Ayala Capitol served as the culmination point of the march, where a program awaited the participants. Here, attendees were enthralled by captivating performances from various groups and talented drag queens, including the renowned Bacolod Drag Queens, the vibrant Artist Community of Art District, the dynamic Gaynon dancers, the enchanting and mesmerizing moves of PolyClass, Xyber, Id’Euls, and the electrifying performance by Marvin Maravilla. These awe-inspiring showcases not only entertained but also resonated deeply, instilling a profound sense of pride and unity within the diverse and elated crowd.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Ryan De Paula expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received. “The Negros Pride March is not just a celebration; it is a call for acceptance and equal rights for every individual,” he emphasized. “We are immensely proud to have led this march and witnessed the unification of different groups and organizations, all united in promoting love, respect, and freedom.”

The Negros Pride March 2023 successfully amplified the voices of the LGBTQ+ community, fostering dialogue and understanding within society. It further cemented Bacolod City’s reputation as a haven for acceptance, tolerance, and respect.

As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose, inspired to continue advocating for equal rights and celebrating the rich diversity that makes Negros Occidental a vibrant and inclusive place. The Negros Pride March stands as a testament to the power of collective action, igniting positive change within society.

Aside from the Pride March, an afterparty was also organized in partnership with Lunar Bar and Cafe where a ball-like program occurred. Inspired by the ball culture in the early 70s and 80s, the community enjoyed various activities in the said venue.

Looking ahead, with HAPI-Bacolod at the helm, the march promises to continue its legacy of championing intersectionality and calling for the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill. #
